Environmentally Friendly Product Lines

Some important Definitions

1,) FSC The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international organization that was established to promote responsible stewardship of the world's forests. FSC certification is the global standard for responsible forest management. When paper is FSC-certified, that means the wood used to manufacture it has come from a sustainable forest that meets strict management standards in regard to environmental impact, treatment of indigenous people and compliance with the laws of the land.

2,) Soy Based Inks - Soy inks are predominately made from non-toxic soybean oil instead of petrochemicals. Using soy reduces VOC emissions (which cause air pollution) and creates a safer work environment for print shop employees. Soybean oil, which is also a renewable resource, aids in recycling the paper after printing since the waste is not considered hazardous and can be treated more easily, completely and cost-effectively.

3,) Pre and Post-Consumer Waste (PCW)- is simply the garbage that individuals routinely discard, either in a waste receptacle or a recycling bin. Post-consumer waste is distinguished from pre-consumer waste, which is the reintroduction of manufacturing scrap (such as trimmings from paper production, defective aluminum cans, etc.) back into the manufacturing process.

Art Angels

Where possible Art Angels print on 100% recycled board, otherwise they use boards manufactured from 100% elemental chlorine free pulp from FSC approved managed forest with a sound replanting program. All new envelopes are now made from 100% recycled materials. The envelopes on the 'Eco-chic' range include straw particles with the recycled pulp;  the notelets and 'Millefleurs' ranges are made from post consumer beverage cartons! All new cello packaging is now made from corn starch and is biodegradable and compostable. Some stock is still packed in the old cello but they are selling through.

Cath Tate Cards

Cath Tate cards use super eco degradable plastics in their cards packing.  The Envelopes are 100% recycled and the paper that the cards are printed on is 300 gsm revived silk board & 75% recycled.  They are currently looking into using 100% recycled paper on the cards and printing with soya based inks.  All of their invoices are printed on recycled paper . 

Koco NY

Cards are printed on recycled paper.

Maria

Maria's cards and envelopes contain post consumer recycled content, and the cello bags are recyclable. She will soon start printing this information on the back of the cards.

Masala Cards

All blank cards are printed on FSC certified paper.  The greeted cards are not.  Sustainability is the hottest issue today on the environmental front. There is so much recycled fiber being used today that it has become equally important to implement methods to sustain our forest. The FSC certification is the top benchmark to ensure that the forests are not clear-cut, toxic herbicides not used, old growth not cut and habitats not destroyed. In order to utilize the FSC logo on a printed piece the chain of custody (COC) for the FSC product must be maintained by all FSC certified parties -- from forest -> to paper mill -> to distributor -> to printer.

Masha D'Yans

These cards have always been printed with soy inks on recycled paper. Just one more important reason to feel good about offering Masha's cards to your customers!

Mint Publishing

All Mint cards are printed on boards from sustainable sources. They are looking into using recycled envelopes on some of their card ranges. The Brilliant Trees range of cards are printed on card from a sustainable source, with a recycled envelope and a compostable bag.

Museums & Galleries – The Eden range is printed on post-consumer waste and FSC certified fibres. It is completely biodegradable and compostable. The inks used are 100% vegetable oil based and the cello bags are made from bio-degradable corn starch. Any unavoidable CO2 emissions created in the production and distribution of the EDEN range are assessed and offset to net zero in partnership with The Carbon Neutral Company and their independent science advisors ECCM. Nella

The Jasper range is made from 100 percent recycled paper and so are the envelopes.

OplusD

OplusD cards are printed on Finch Paper. All Finch Paper products now carry the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) on-product label, which certifies that the wood fiber used in the product line meets the sourcing requirements of the SFI® program. As well, all of the OplusD envelopes are at least 30% recycled: most are 100% recycled.

Portfolio

Most Portfolio cards are produced on FSC materials, printed from recycled aluminum plates, chemical free,   on machines with totally eco-friendly compressors utilizing soya based inks. The paper is from sustainable forests and is Chlorine free.

PQ2

All of the Victoriana envelopes are FSC approved.

Scarlett

The cardstock for the handmade cards is Via and is cotton based.  No
trees were harmed in the making of these cards.  The papers we use on
them are mostly handmades or partially recycled. The printed cards are done on a cornwall stock which is partially recycled and is FSC approved.  Which basically means the forest it comes from is replenished.  The inks are all environmentally friendly too.

Shannon Martin

All Shannon Martin cards are now printed using soy-based inks on FSC-certified paper stock. This recycled paper includes 30% postconsumer waste and was made with wind generated electricity. It is also acid free. Shannon Martin has also replaced her white envelopes with a custom matte copper colour, printed on 30% recycled paper.

Stuck4Words

All new products will now be badged with the FSC logo.  2008 Christmas cards have the FSC logo on them. Inks are all vegetable-based and the company is just in the process of getting its environmental accreditation ISO 14001. Cello bags are not yet recyclable but they are aiming to implement recyclable bags by 2009.

Velvet Olive

Velvet Olive cards uses inks that non-polluting and all the board comes from sustainable forests in the UK and Norway. The cello bags are compostable in 45 days.

Wildcard Co. - Xmas

Printed on board manufactured from 25% recycled fibre and 75% mixed source pulp from Forestry Stewardship Council approved managed forests. These cards are fully recyclable and biodegradable.
